Special People Inspiring Recovery in Time

Intervention, Counseling, Mediation and Training Services

About
Us

Spirit & Associates is an organization dedicated to educating and assisting families, friends and professionals to help those "in need of help" but may not wish to be helped.

"Spirit"    stands for     Special   People   Inspiring   Recovery   In   Time.

Sometimes people make the mistake of believing that "We," the Staff of Spirit & Associates are the "special people." This is not the intent or what actually occurs.

The truly "special" people are those family members and friends who care enough to have the courage to be involved, to be willing to take action even when action may not be easy. To be willing to do what may be necessary to help the individual in distress even when they may not wish to receive help.

Those who choose "to be part of the solution rather than a part of the problem." These are the truly "Special People."

Penny Pennachi,  BIS, MBBF, CAC, CCS, CCDP, BRI II

For the past 22 years Penny Pennachi has worked as a clinician in the delivery of care to the alcoholic and chemically addicted individual.

She has extensive experience working with victims and perpetrators of trauma and abuse including, but not limited to, PTSD, Sexual Abuse and Domestic Violence with both the victim and the batterer.

She encourages client "empowerment" and offers specific insights into dealing with the treatment resistant client.

Penny is a Master Breaking Barriers Facilitator ( MBBF ) and Batterers Intervention Specialist ( BIS ) who has implemented Cognitive Restructuring programs in the criminal justice system.

She is president of "Spirit & Associates," a professional intervention and training service providing care to the addicted individual and their families. She is also on the Board of Directors of The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Against Substance Abuse (EMPASA).

She has conducted numerous training programs on the subjects of Alcoholism & Chemical Dependency, PTSD, Intervention, and Cognitive Restructuring through out the United States and Europe.

On a personal note.....

Penny has experienced and walked her own personal journey of recovery since the age of twenty-five. As of May 15, 2008 she has 25 years drug and alcohol free.

Penny came from a broken home and familial addiction. By the age of 12, she was classified as a 'garbage head.' She has suffered significant emotional, physical and sexual abuse and resided with her divorced alcoholic mother. By the age of 16, her drugs of choice were methamphetamine and alcohol.

Penny went on to struggle with an eating disorder, domestic violence, legal issues including Children and Youth Services, and divorce and mental health issues.

To know Penny today, one would never imagine that she had ever experienced the above. Penny truly is a miracle and she dedicates her life to helping others to embrace their own recovery, while often witnessing the same miracle occur in each of their lives.

Eugene E. Middleton,  MBBF, CEAP, BRI II

For the past 30 years Gene Middleton has worked in the field of addictions treatment. During this time he has worked with private addictions treatment agencies for the purpose of effective development and implementation of Marketing activities for the successful delivery of care to adults and adolescents in need of treatment for addiction.

During the past 30 years he has worked extensively in conducting interventions for families and employers for the purpose of helping the alcoholic or addict to get the help they need.

He has conducted numerous training programs for addiction treatment professionals in the effective use of intervention techniques to help the addicted individual to obtain treatment. Previous presentations have been to the South East Conference on Alcoholism and Drug addiction ( SECAD ), US Department of State, US Federal Reserve Board, University of Scranton, Pennsylvania State University and the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Against Substance Abuse ( EMPASA ).

He is a Master Breaking Barriers Facilitator ( MBBF ) qualified in the delivery of Cognitive Restructuring education and a Certified Employee Assistance Professional ( CEAP) with over sixteen years experience in the design, implementation, and delivery of Employee Assistance Programs for both Government Agencies and Private Industry.

On a personal note.....

Gene has not only worked as a professional in the field of Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency intervention and treatment for the past thirty years, but he also has 'lived' through the disease of addiction himself....... having had careers in aviation as a pilot and as an executive in the world of finance and loosing it all as a result of his addictions.

Today, helping individuals in the professions and all walks of life to be able to receive the help they need, he believes that experiencing the horrors of the illness first hand himself far better prepared him to help those in need than all the years of professional training that have followed.

Today, he is fortunate to have lived the past thirty-two years in his own personal recovery, and, knows and remains forever grateful that there were those who cared enough to help him at a time when he could not help himself.

Along with their academic qualifications, professional training and life experience they afford their clients and families, Penny Pennachi and Gene Middleton recognize the need to offer and maintain high integrity while serving in the capacity of interventionists.

Penny and Gene are each a Board Registered Interventionist level 2 (BRI II). Therefore, they abide by the credentialing requirements and Code of Ethics of that governing board to ensure the highest of standards in the field of service they offer.

Team Interventionists Approach

We both have extensive experience with conducting interventions independently, with a combined experience in excess of forty years. While working as "independent" interventionist we were successful at getting the client to accept treatment at the first meeting approximately seventy percent of the time.

Over the past eight years we have found by working together, as a Team, our overall success on first time meetings with our clients has increased to better than ninety percent.

Penny Pennachi and Gene Middleton, highly recognized for their effectiveness utilizing the Team Approach, shared their expertise with other Addiction Professionals and Clinicians in an article published by an addiction field magazine dedicated to outlining what's working in services for people with addictive disorders.
